I am in the process of setting up my sewing room
in a new space in our house. I am wondering about
a few things.
1. Are there any guidelines about locating the
machines, cutting table, ironing board, storage
within the room. I know that kitchen designs are
based on certain facts about how work flows. Is
there a similar flow with sewing?
2. Storage ideas. I have one shelving unit
(approx. 39″ wide x 18″ deep x 7′ high) that’s it.
I am wondering what kind of storage you all use to
keep things neat and tidy, handy yet organized. I
want to avoid clutter at all cost! Where do you
keep and/or how did you organize things like
thread, misc. notions, trims, scissors/cutters,
blades, glue, buttons, markers, patterns, rulers,
etc. Then what do I do with all the fabric? I am
completely overwhelmed.
My former space was as cramped as a closet, where
everything was on top of me tucked into little
nooks and crannies. Somehow I managed. With this
new start I want to be more efficient and
organized! Can anyone advise? Do you know of any
web sites with information? Publications?
Thanks, I look forward to

Andryea, Lucky you! There are two publications that I know of to refer to for ideas. Setting Up Your Sewing Space by Myrna Giesbrecht and the other is a Palmer-Pletsch publication - Dream Sewing Spaces by Lynette Ranney Black. I recommend the latter book. Has beautiful color pictures. Good info from both. You might check out http://www.sewingworld.com also. They have a category specifically for this situation. Good Luck and have fun!!!!
