Has anyone had any experience in sewing baby slings? I was wondering if there is a particular pattern that someone has tried with success? I have come across a few on the net (the padded ones especially appeal to me) but I have no idea which to choose.

Shelly, I made the one by Elizabeth Lee when my daughter was a newborn. We lived in very hot, sunny southern California at the time, though, and it was just too hot for her to be scrunched up in there. So I gave it away to someone else who used it and liked it. Now that said daughter is 3, I wish I still had it. There are times when we go out and she just wants to be carried a bit, and the sling would really help distribute the weight. They're also good as impromptu napping or changing mats. I think the URL is http://www.elddesigns.com (not sure about that, though).

I have a mayawrap that I bought from http://www.mayawrap.com and I LOVE it. Warning - it's not padded - but I really adored it and wore my son in it until he was thirty-two pounds and just too heavy. I walked blocks and blocks with him and got to the point where I didn't even have to use my hands to support/steady him. I recently saw that Mayawrap generously offers instructions on their site for making your own slings - pretty cool! BTW, the long 'tail' comes in handy for covering baby from sun and wind and rain. Also convenient for nursing. Here's the link for sewing http://www.mayawrap.com/sewSling.shtml
