Sewing children’s tights

joy | Posted in General Discussion on

Has anyone had any luck in sewing girl’s tights? I have made leggings from cotton/lycra for the children several times but have never made actual tights. How do you add the foot section to the bottom of the leggings?

I had a matching turtleneck and tights set when I was a child.  They had a seam down the back, along the foot, and across the end of the toes.  They were miserable to wear as the seam always twisted to the side of the foot, pulling the tights uncomfortably around the leg.  My mom cut off the feet and hemmed them to wear with socks, with the strap that goes under the foot.

Are you making these tights as part of a costume that needs to match?  I know that tights are not expensive and do not last long, which is why I made leggings with socks when my girls were small.  Cathy

I searched for a pair of purple tights to match a purchased dress for my granddaughter, but could not find the correct color. I ended up making a pair of purple leggings! Sounds like that was the correct choice after all.

I think so too!  They were probably much more comfortable, warmer and will last as long as the dress will, and can be worn with other cute outfits as well!  Cathy

Her purple dress and leggins sound so cute!  Years ago I found more colors and varieties of tights at Osh Kosh B'Gosh but don't know if they are still in business or not.  They also had such cute feminine bib overalls and jumpers.  Thanks for bringing back some happy memories!  Mary

Most tights are made of very stretchy nylon and have a simple straight seam across the toes; the fabric then stretches over the heel and not over the ankle, like a tube sock.

I've never made them from scratch but have re-made adult tights to fit a child; I used a narrow zigzag on the seams.
