Sewing Connection Books?

seasell | Posted in The Archives on

I see on Shirley Adams’s website that all the Sewing Connection books are reduced to $8.00. That seems like a great price for all the stuff that is described as being in them. However, I’ve never seen Sewing Connection or any of the books, just heard some good things from other sewers. Anybody know anything about the books?
Thanks!

    Hi,

I haven't seen any of the Sewing Connection books either, but I did watch Shirley Adams' show when it was on PBS. I've taken a chance and ordered the series, they had a great deal, Series 2-17 (Number 1 has been sold out) for $40, shipping included. Haven't received them yet, I think they're being sent by ground mail, the whole package is supposed to weigh nine pounds. Since I'm in Canada it will take a while longer. As soon as they arrive, I'll let you know what they're like.

Her series was wonderful and she's a great teacher. The books are another story, they're very amateurishly done and not great for learning. I bought one and recently saw another in a store. It's a shame she didn't "sell out" even to the extent of getting a professionally ghost written and published book like Nancy Zieman, who is not as creative or as good a teacher.

      Hi,

I just read your post, I wish you'd sent it in sooner. Is there any hope that as she wrote more of these books that she improved her technique? The pictures that were shown in her catalogue made the books look so interesting, I thought that was a preview of the content inside. Perhaps there will be some new techniques or ways of doing something that will make my purchase of these books worth it.

I just came home from the post office with my package of Sewing Connection books. As you said they aren't up to the quality of other books that have been printed but, the written instructions are good, the drawing are just a guide, I'd guess. Photos could have been better, most are dark, or an odd color, must be the ink and paper that was used. There's a lot of good information here, although it means a lot of reading to be done, we have gotten spoiled by step-by-step photos that are in other books, haven't we? I'm pleased with them, although if I'd had to pay full price I don't think I'd be as happy, this bundle was $40, shipping included, that's $2.50 each. Now to find the time to go through them page by page. I may even have to dig out the old video tapes I have some of her shows taped on, and watch them to refresh my memory. It's cold outside, guess I have time now.

They are more than worth it at that price. I think I paid $15, which is part of why I felt let down by the quality. Enjoy them and please post anything especially interesting you learn from them.

I forgot to mention the 'bonus' i found in the box. The packing material was crumpled up pattern tissue which I had to smooth out. It was part of Butterick 3575, the pattern for the pants, in my size. Not telling what that was. There were two identical sheets, wish they would have sent the rest of the pieces, instead.

            Matty.
