Sewing Feet Favorites

thimbles1260 | Posted in General Discussion on

I watched a Nancy Zieman segment yesterday on the uses of various sewing feet.  I found it interesting and I’m wondering what your favorite applications are for various feet.  I love my Bernina, but additional feet are expensive so if I need to purchase one I need to be sure it’s just that…..a need.  I will admit that the universal foot, the quarter inch foot for quilt piecing, the walking foot and the embroidery foot  are about the only ones I use.  There are several more in the box that I’ve never even had on the machine!  Now, I should be able to do better than that, don’t you think?  Help!

Do you have an edge stitching foot? If you do top-stitching it is wonderful. I purchased a cording foot but it didn't look like the one Nancy used yesterday..instead it is the one she recommended as a second choice. I hope she has another show on feet....it was so helpful....the narrow hemming foot takes lots of practice and her viewer tip on holding the threads to start the edge was great ! Threads had articles on the narrow hemmer foot that were excellent:..Issue 98: http://www.taunton.com/store/pages/th_toc_098.asp

Get that manual out and learn how to use those feet.! You'll be amazed how muc h they will help you. I use the narrow rolled hem foot all the time for that tiny hem on bridemaids dresses. I also love the blind hem foot that comes with the Viking machines.

You can also use the feet for things other than what they are actually designed for by just trying them out.

    Hi Thimbles1260,

I like the piping foot. I can use it to apply piping to a garment or I can use it when making my own piping. It's pretty cool.

My two favorite feet are #1 - the edge stitching foot. I use this for topstitching and heirloom sewing, lace to lace.
#2 is my pintuck foot which I use to make the tiny piping I use in heirloom sewing. I probably use this foot the most after my basic foot.

I haven't made pintucks in a long while, but that foot is really nice. I love how it just guides it along.Marcy

My Bernina Edgestitch foot #10 is my most favorite, and the walking foot the most overall usefull in my humble opinion... or not so humble!

I also like the Invisible zipper foot -- if you sew garments, the invisible zippper is a RTW (ready to wear) staple in better clothng lines.

Bernina accessories are priced high... but the quality is there. Precision is the name.  I do have a generic adapter for low shank feet and an assortment of piping feet of various sizes. The Bernina piping foot is one sized...

The Bernina feet are awsome.   Maybe you can get your family onboard for group gifting of a foot or two for special holidays.
