I’m looking for an easy to use and simple to learn sewing machine for my eight year old daughter. After sitting down at a Janome 4623LE(recommended to me by the salesperson) I realized that machines had come a long way since my 1970’s singer machine I still use. So I decided that this will be a joint gift to my daughter and me. Something both of us will use. My sewing capabilities have been limited to my machine, I used to sew lots of clothes, but might consider expanding my horizons with a new machine.
Any other suggestions on machines for the beginner and mom?
Thanks,
Donna

There have been many discussions on buying sewing machines. I suggest you search the archives for discussions. I would suggest, as I have before, that you purchase from a reputable dealer who can service the machine and show you how to use it. I would also purchase the best you can afford. It may seem to have more than you ever will use, but if you don't have it you cannot expand into it. My own personal preference would be for the best computerized machine you can afford. They are a big improvement over mechanicals. But then there are wonderful mechanicals out there too. Take your daughter to a local sewiing machine dealer and try some out. What fun.
I think for the $ a 4623 is a great machine. I gave my grown daughter a 4618 (not quite as full featured as the4623) and it has been easy for her to learn and a real workhorse. --Comes with very useful feet etc. --I totally agree with suesew re: buying from a trustworthy dealer with on site service and new owner classes if possible.
