I live in a sorority house of 24 girls, and we are looking into purchasing a sewing machine. It probably would mostly be used for making pillows, mending clothes, and hemming pants and tablecloths. The only problem is some girls in the house tend to be a little dense when it comes to common sense, and we are looking for a sewing machine that is simple but rugged (and not too expensive). Any suggestions?
Thank you!

As an experienced sewer the best advice that I can give to you is find a dealer that is willing to work with 2 or 3 of you and teach you the basics of any machine. That way there will not be just one person that everyone will run to for advice and also keep the instruction manual chained if necessary to the machine and add any notes that the dealer gives you directly in the book on the pages that the tips are based on. Also any entry or basic machine should be able to do the things that you are talking about. You will also want to have a general understanding from the rest of the girls that whoever causes a problem with it must also solve the problem before the next intended use of the machine. Also keep the number handy of the dealer so that you can also call with questions or concerns.
Hope this helps.
