hello! I have been asked to make dresses for a competetive ballroom dancer and would welcome any tips on sewing stretch fabrics. I’m a nervous wreck but know that once I’ve made one I’ll probably be Ok.
Any suggestions please.

Jacki, there's a lot of information out there. Check out the books "Sewing With Knits" by Connie Long, and a Singer book with the same title, "Sewing With Knits." There is also Singer's "Sewing Activewear." All of these have good information about sewing with stretch fabrics.

*Hi Elona, Thanks for the info. England can still be a bit of a desert when it comes to information. The interned is changing all that fortunately. We English Sewers are always astounded at the abundance of books, equipment and know how you have available to you in the US. I do have some of the Singer books and will look for these you mention. Thankss again. RegardsJack.

*Hi Jacki, I'm suprised to hear that sewing information is not easily found in England. In my very distant future, I plan to spend an extended amount of time there as I had in much earlier years! While attending Fashion Design School, we were taught to use wooly nylon thread in the bobbin. It must be hand wound otherwise it will you will lose the elasticity of the thread. It's very important that you use the correct sewing needle intended for knits and change it often as knits tend to dull needles rather quickly. Working with knits is a challenge! I find it intimidating. It requires practicing with samples of the fabric, trying different tensions, working with the right thread and needles. Good luck.
