Thimble (in the invisible zippers topic) advised basting in the zipper. I think basting may be underrated. I didn't do it much until I recently found that I'd much, MUCH rather baste in a sleeve than pin it. It is about the same amount of effort, and I don't scratch and stick myself with pins the entire time I'm setting the darn thing. I think basting may have a bad reputation in our "I want to do this in ten minutes" mode of sewing. It really doesn't (for a sleeve cap) take any longer than pinning it properly, but I like it much better.
Anyone else have situations where they'd rather baste?
*I fully endorse basting sleeves first. now that clothes are closer to the body, we are seeing less of the sleeve attached to body first, then a continuous sleeve and side seam. the look is completely different, and is well worth the extra time. In the wonderful Armani articles by Marcy Tilton (thankyou Marcy) she discusses pressing the seam open thru the sleeve head. I would like to hear whether you all press the seam towards the sleeve, open partway - lets talk!
*I need tips on bound buttonholes.please. both on medium and lightweight fabrics. Love the article in latest "Threads" by Carla Lopez, but need to perfect bound buttonholes before trying out the ideas.
