Sewing with lambskin

margeatsffqh | Posted in General Discussion on

I am a NEW sewer of lambskin and am hoping that others may have some experience on “buying” as well as sewing tips.  I will be attempting to use the lambskin, ultrasuede and such to make apparel worn for horse showing.  Thank you.

    Hi Marge

You didn't post a question so there was nothing for anyone to respond with. I do have one suggestion tho since you mention this is a new sewing project...start with pig suede first until you get the hang of things. Pig suede isn't a supple or nice as lamb but it's about the same weight. It also costs a lot less than lamb so you might want to experiment with it for a first project. If your item comes out well in pig, then move onto the lamb. Btw, leather (and western apparel) is my specialty ;-).

Great advice, thank you.  Do you have a website??

I have 2 sites but I don't know that either would be particularly helpful to you at this time as they are not designed with home-sewing in mind. One is intended for start-up clothing designers who'd like to take the big step of going pro and producing designs in quantity. You can find that at http://www.designer-entrepreneurs.com

My second site is personal with some discussion of personal projects (I'll be making substantive updates this weekend). These projects include everything from my discussion of data collections of women's body size measurements to interesting processes I've developed to produce unusual design effects (pleating etc).  At this time, I don't think I have anything leather related up but I will be posting a tutorial on sewing a leather vest (lined with welt pockets) very soon, probably this weekend. That site address is http://www.kathleenfasanella.com

Also, I don't know that you'd be interested but (be sure to register on my site if you are) I will be sponsoring a leather coat design contest. The competition will focus on a designer's preparedness to develop a design concept that can be manufactured so it'll be a bit different from usual design competitions. Lastly, I am a leather pattern maker and as such, I do have some leather patterns in my library. However, these are industrial patterns used in manufacturing and are different from home sewing patterns and I don't know whether you have the background to know how to use them. I also have two complete sets of steel leather dies for 2 coats in sizes S-XL to say nothing of a LOT of hardware (metal buttons, buckles, studs, hairpipe etc) and extra leather but you'd need to come visit me and bring a truck for that, lol. Hope this helps.
