Shapes Pattern Discussion

SewTerri | Posted in Patterns on

Hi everybody. Thought this was a good place to discuss these patterns since the designers are frequent Threads contributors. I’m working on my fourth Nine Lives Vest in this Etsuko Furuya for Echino cotton fabric – see link below. You can see the first three in the review I wrote on Patternreview.com. This time I want to lengthen the top and was wondering if has lengthened this top to hip length and any thoughts? I’m also using this dotted fabric for the facings on the Sewing Workshop Peony Vest. I was wondering if I should cut the facing with the panther upside down so that it’s right side up when it folds down? Or would that look goofy? The fabric for the vest is a linen that matches the beige background. Ref Superbuzzy link http://www.superbuzzy.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=88_95_97&products_id=2583

I love your idea of cutting the facing so that the panther appears right-side up when the "lapel" of the vest folds back and down. From the technical drawing of the Peony vest pattern, it appears that when the front edge folds back, it lies at a somewhat-horizontal angle. I would want the panther right there on the seam line, I think, so I would play with the pattern lay-out, maybe putting the facing on the cross-grain to align the panther along the front edge of the facing.I'm glad you brought this subject up here. It's been awhile since I looked at those patterns, and I think the Shapes patterns are lovely. I think I'd like to try the Eleven Eleven skirt in some soft linen I have in my stash. I hope some others here will discuss their experiences with this pattern line.Good luck with the project, and I hope you'll show us some photos when finished.

I've made the Peony.  You don't want the panther upside down.  Put it right side up and, because of the fold, expect it to look like it's walking downhill.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I did play around with it and agree on the panther being right side up. Actually, since those motifs are sparse, there will only be one on either facing so I'll play with the placement. I have been enjoying my Shapes pieces and will be sewing up more. I posted some reviews and need to post more but here's my collection so far on my Flickr photos. http://www.flickr.com/photos/terrihk/
