user-216728 | Posted in General Sewing Info on

I am making a bath robe for my grandchild and I am having trouble with the shawl collar.  Can anyone tell How to put this together.

What pattern are you using? Maybe someone will be familiar with the specific one.

Are you having trouble understanding a written direction? If so, please post what it says for help interpreting it.

A shawl collar is probably constructed by seaming at the center back and then stitching the collar to the upper front and across the back, but it could be done differently. Then there would be an undercollar to stitch to the upper collar right sides together. Then clip as needed, press the seam, turn and somehow tack to the collar seam. Other finishing is probably involved, so quoting the actual instructions from the pattern would help.

I remember being so completely confounded by a shawl collar pattern that was cut as part of the main pattern pieces that I cut the collar extension off and made a separate collar pattern instead!

Let us know which pattern you are using, and maybe we can help more specifically.

Thank you so much for your replies.  I decided to do as you suggest and make my own collar and join it at the back neck seam.  The pattern is a very old one that was given to me and the instructions are missing.  The collar is a very weird shape that does not seem to fit the back neck.  Thank you again.

i just completed a bathrobe for my 5 yr old. it had a tuxedo collar with curved lapel which is probably similar to the shawl collar construction. the hardest part was getting the drastic pivoting correct, where the front lapel facing's shoulder seams turned a right angle to form the center back collar. it took a few tries to get right. i just suggest easing and hand basting before checking and final sewing.
