Sheer fabric with scalleped edges

bettyv38 | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

Hello – I am making a wedding dress which I have already made a sample.  I want to put a sheer overlay on top of the dress which is very sheer (see through) and all around the bottom it has sequins, some pearls, etc. and is also scalloped all the way around.

I bought the fabric but what I didn’t think about was the scalloped edges.  The pattern is cut on the basis to hang and flow the right way.  But to use the pattern to cut out the overlay I do not know how to make it so that the scalloped edges match.  There are three pieces to the front and 3 pieces to the back. Front piece and to side front panels and a back piece with two side back panels.

The front side panels seam with the two side back panels and as you seam them together it starts to flow out as to make a train.

So how do I cut out the overlay to be able to match the scallops on all the pieces of the overlay .  The overlay will be sewn by itself and only be attached at the waistline.  The fabric for the overlay is all sheer and has a design on the bottome which is about 2.50 ft high and it is all scalloped around the bottom.  I though about laying the bottom edeges of the pattern pieces on the bottom part of the scalloped edges but then I don;t know when I seam it together if one piece will be longer or shorter than the other pieces as it all has to meet together.

help!!

    Matching Scalloped Edges

I would start at the bottom for cutting and sewing, matching the scallops one panel at a time.

If I were you, I'm going to start cutting and sewing the bottom part then, match the scallops in one panel. similar to what spicegirl1 said.

I think I would first cut those pieces in equal size and then attach them over the dress fabric. I sew one showpony two piece dress where I have done similar type of work.
