Carol, the first thing to check is the type of needle you are using. Does the fabric you are describing have a rubber-like texture? If so, try a "Stretch" needle and expect to change needles often. Also, you may need to pick off the sequins from the seamline if they are removable. (If they are heat-fused, they probably won't come off). Additionally, check the type of thread you are using. Choose a high-quality thread and use the same brand in both needle and bobbin. Best of luck!

*Carol, I recently used a fabric that was called "confetti" and it was a real pain. It was somewhat a stretchy fabric with little "sequins" all over it but they aren't true sequins. They are attached to the fabric with some type of adhesive. I found that my thread would break or skip and that the needle would be full of "gunk". I ended up putting wax paper down over the fabric when I was running a seam. The wax paper was just enough to keep the gunk off the needle and worked fine. I did use a larger needle (heavy duty) to break through the little shiney sequin things. After you finish the seam the wax paper just rips right off due to the needle punctures. Might help you out....Cathy

*If this is confetti dot fabric or the funky foil fabric that is out there right now....Use sewers aid....it is a silicon gel in a little sqeeze bottle. do a line on four sides of the thread spool in the machine, and sew away! It was recommended to me by one of the ladies in the fabric store that is recently Joann's who has been there as long as I can remember....I do alot of sewing with this type of fabric for belly dancing costumes and this stuff works great combined with a ballpoint needle if the fabric is stretch. If the fabric is really SEWN-ON sequins, I can't help as I have trouble with that stuff myself.
