shortening sleeves on a suit coat

suzieoh | Posted in General Discussion on

My son got a suit for Christmas, but I forgot to get the sleeves shortened and he leaves for college on Sunday. I’m an intermediate seamstress, but out of practice – can I do this, or should I farm it out?

Does the sleeve have vents in it or are they straight across? If they have a vent I would farm it out.

I agree with mem, but I'd also call a menswear store to ask how long the sleeves should be--where they should hit on his hand-- and it may not be necessary to fit them. My son recently was fitted for a tuxedo, and I was surprised by how long the jacket and shirt sleeves were set--almost three inches lower than tailors used to fit my husband's suits! (Both jacket and shirt covered his wristbones.) The trend to oversizing has hit the formal world, too, and you don't want to make his look oddly short....
