simple girl’s skirt

I am starting to sew again in my middle 50’s – haven’t sewn since high school. Have a new, very simple machine and want to make gathered skirts for my granddaughter. I’m think all I really need to do is add 1/2″ to her waist size after tripling it for gathering, and about 2 inches to the length for hem, plus adding 1″ for the elastic casing.

As you can see, it’s been a very long time since I’ve done this. Any special hints or tips?

Hi, a couple of things, tripling the fabric might make way too much bulk at the waist. You might want to gather it into a hip-deep yoke that is cut only 6-7" bigger than her hips then gather that. Also, you might not want a simple rectangle, but have it flare at the bottom.

I'm not sure how old your granddaughter is, but skirt styles now run more towards a-lines close fitted to the body or a bias-cut a-line for any girl old enough to be into fashion. You can still put an elastic waist in them. You should scan the on-line patterns at Simplicity and Butterick, they have lots of kids clothes.
