small dog carrier pattern

Linda | Posted in Patterns on

Once while shopping in a local fabric store, I noticed a woman with an unusual purse. When the purse moved, I realized it was a pet carrier. She had her small dog somehow suspended, carried in this “purse” at her front. I have since adopted a small dog (four pounds adult) and would love to make a similar carrier. Does anyone have suggestions, know of a pattern?? Thanks. Linda

We have an eight pound adult dog for which I would also like to make a carrier of the type you have described. I wiil have to try to follow this issue and hope someone has a pattern. Thanks for bringing this to the discussions. Christine

The above link is a retailer for the carriers you mentioned, over priced in my opinion, one could easily adapt a tote or purse to be appropriate, using puppy friendly materials, mesh, nylon straps and plastic buckles as necessary, Suitability Patterns is a supplier of patterns for the horse/rider and has a variety of totes and such that could be modified. Also try Birchstreet for tons of patterns for pets and family, http://www.birchstreetclothing.com/index1.html

      Hope that is helpful.

Linda, my first image was a hand held tote (kinda like a gym bag), made from a simple rectangle w/handles on both top edges, and maybe a velcro seal. With a tiny dog you could also consider over-the-shoulder. I'd make closeable peep holes on at least one rounded end, and maybe leg holes in the bottom. LOL I am picturing putting the little babe down to stretch his legs and all you see is a tote w/legs!

I'm a cat person but love dogs, who are a tad more versatile and tend to like being taken places :-) I think a little pocket pooch would be great fun.

Edited to say the reason for my first image was that I didn't pay attention that this is a front carrier! Oy

I happened to search for a carrier on ebay and came across this, I know it is great fun to make ones own things, but at this price, use it for a jumping off place for making the perfect custom bag.....Just a thought

Variations of the Pet Pouch are the ones I've seen here. Almost like a baby Snuggli. hmmmmm. i wonder if a Snuggli could be modified to suit a smallish dog?
