space dye?

rjf | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

I have a large cone of white cotton chenille I’d like to weave with.  Has anyone out there tried space-dying yarn?  I’d like to dye it before weaving and it seems like a good summer project for outside.     rjf

I've dyed cotton yarn and produced some fantastic, brilliant colors that knitted up beautifully.  I pulled the yarn off the cone by winding it through my hand then around my elbow and back again until I had a fairly large "hank".  Then I squirted various colors of Procion dye on it, usually in about 6-8" sections.  After curing, I rinsed and washed the yarn and allowed it to air dry.  You could make your color repeats whatever length you want depending on the look you want.  Have fun with it!
