Stripes & Stripes

Stitchwitch | Posted in General Discussion on

I just need some quick refreshment advise on sewing with vertical stripes. My fabric is red with a fine white stripe. Do I place my CF’s & CB’s on the white stipe or in the middle of two white stipes?

It depends on where you want it. If the stripes are even and paired you won't have a problem deciding. Choose a fold where there is a mirror image (same on both left and right sides of the body).

Hold the fabric up to yourself and check out which stripe is most eye-catching, the one that will draw the eye of the viewer, and try positioning it in different places to see what happens when it crosses different curves and parts of your body.

Vertical stripes are generally flattering but can be distracting or call attention to curves we would rather not accentuate. If the striping is not terribly distinctive, it doesn't really matter where you center the garment.
