the right fabric with the right pattern?

smfilet | Posted in General Discussion on

I’ve been doing alterations for years, but now I would like to jump into “real” sewing.  I have some polyester rayon lycra material and would like to make a nice pair of flowy pants.  Does anyone have any hints when reading a pattern if I could use this material?

the right fabric with the right pattern

Your fabric sounds beautiful.  That little box on the back side of a pattern lists all kinds of fabrics that would work for the pattern.  Since the list is usually very long I didn't used to pay much attention.    I like to try unexpected combinations, etc., but I have to admit that the biggest messes I ever made were when I used a completely different weave than they suggested.  Now I find it easier to study their list and figure out what's NOT on the list and why it isn't.  That usually helps me get a better understanding of the pattern.  I can see that they are only suggesting soft, drapey fabrics or only firm fabrics with body, etc.,  I hope that makes sense.
