I have just finish sewing a new pair of jeans, and the question always comes up is “where to top stitch them, on the outside leg seam or the inner leg seam, both edges of the waist band or just the bottom edge, at the hem?” I have looked through my collection of threads magazine and I can’t seem to find any article on the topic of “top stitching jeans”. Is there a simple rule for top stitching.

Top Stitching Jeans
Look at RTW. I think most have the top stitching on the inseam and both edges of the waistband. The inseam and top edge are because these are the edges subjected to the most friction/wear and tear and the bottom edge of the waistband for a balanced look as well as reinforcement...jeans sometimes are subjected to a lot of tugging to get them onto the body!
Jeans topstitching
I've had the same problem as you. I looked at RTW jeans/jeans in catalogues etc etc and finally decided to make up my own mind, as there didn't appear to be one particular set of rules for top stitching.
In the end I put one row of edgestitch along the top and bottom of the waistband.I started to do edgestitch and top stitch but it didn't look right so there was a bit of unpicking to do.The finished waistband left room for a buttonhole as I can't wear metal next to my skin--so no rivets.
I topstitched the outer leg seam, so it would be seen , and didn't bother top stitching the inner legs (though I might do that next time). Also top stitched the leg hems.
I wore them yesterday and was pleased with the result.
