Twisted Elastic

dizzylizzy | Posted in General Sewing Info on

I have used 1/2″ elastic, both braided and ribbed in waistbands.  I make certain that the elastic is flat before stitching.  As soon as I stretch the waistband to put the skirt on, the elastic twists somewhere along the line.  Is there anyway to prevent this from happening?

I use a nonroll elastic only. I put it in per normal but then stitch in the ditch in my side seams. It doesn't show and the elastic never twists. Not all elastics will take to being sewn thru, but I have had good luck with the non roll.

When I do my casing, I always stitch just as close to the top of the casing (right next to the edge) before I thread the elastic.  It gives a nice clean finish and seems to help stablize the elastic as well.  And, for very thin elastic, I do the stitch in the ditch bit too.
