Twisted sleeve

Stitchwitch | Posted in General Discussion on

I’ve just inserted my sleeves in a jacket, back & front notches matching perfectly, BUT the sleeve is twisted to the back. So when you put your arm in you get a draline from the back to the front of the sleeve. I thought of unpicking just the top part of the sleeve and adjust it until it hangs staright but then I will have almost all my ease in the back of the sleeve and almost nothing in the front of the sleeve. Any suggestions as to how to fix this dilemma?

My first thought is to question if you cut the sleeve on the straight of the goods.

If you have a forward shoulder you may need to alter where the shoulder seam is. First step can be unpicking and basting the sleeve in as you described. It's always worth basting first, especially if you haven't done a muslin, to check fit.

If you've already trimmed the underarm seam, you can't steal a bit from the front seam allowance to regain some of the ease in the front, which is one option.

Another option is to shift the entire sleeve; the underarm seams won't match up, but how often are people going to see or check out your underarm seams? Take the sleeve completely off, then try on the jacket again and pull the sleeve up onto your arm, rotating it till it hangs correctly. Pin and note the changes, so that you can make the same change to the other sleeve and/or the lining.
