Is there someone monitoring posts? If not , why not?

Does not look to me like anyone is monitoring. I have reported "Inappropriate" posts, but they still are on the site. I am going to be cynical here and say that there is no money in Gatherings.
Automated site
It has been pretty clear for a long time that this site has been automated. Threads earns money from advertising that is on this site, but they won't for very long as there are few visits any longer. A very sad demise for a community that was once so full of promise and shared expertise!

automated hmm where do I find the categories
Hi Teaf5: Okay, you seem to be many steps ahead of me in understanding the current Gatherings Site. On the old site there was a column on the left that listed the different categories of conversation and how many posts there were on them since last viewing. I found that incredibly helpful. Now I am at a lost to find the categories to decide how to post. I also see the running tally of all new posts in chronilogical order (which I think was requested) but nothing that shows all the categories and the conversations you have not yet read. I learned soooo much by rambling through these posts and often felt a part of a real community as people shared concern for other's personal challenges. It was wonderful, and one of the reasons I think people gathered here to communicate. Not just for information but also for understanding and care. So, can you tell me where I find the categories to know where to post.
I see in the frequently asked questions they state that there is no spell checker. I cannot imagine why that was not an automatic. They did say they have a new platform. While still working (I am now retired) I know whenever a new platform came on board it was hyped to be better than sliced bread but usually even the techies couldn't find the loaf to know if it was sliced or not. These complex computer platforms are often very difficult to navigate and run and most companies go for the least expensive people power. So their techies while wonderful may not have the background experience or problem solving skills needed to smooth out a new platform so they can understand it.
When a new platform is presented to a company, believe me the sales folks do not tell of any of the difficulties. Like buying anything else it is hard to know what to ask. We still don't have to ask if a steering wheel is included with a car, but soon we may have to have that as an add on. If you assume a new platform has the things of the old one because the sales folks don't mention that they are not there, then you are in trouble. I wonder if that is what happened with the spell check. That is so basic.
The automation of any web site is always fraught with challenges. Any web site needs people supervising it to make sure there is not major dissent or inappropriate postings. Both seem to be present on this site without any intervention from whoever is charged with supervising. Thus I suspect that this site is just one more thing that has been piled onto some lowly person's job description and there isn't time in any day to get to it. So I am going to email Taunton with a list of concerns. I will see if that has a response. Probably not, as everything revolves around making money and this site probably doesn't generate a lot of money. I think most folks have gravitated towards other conversation sites. So sad, when this was such a vibrant community of textile artists and learners all caring for each other.

After tagging the 12 new posts/threads in Creative Machine that were posted 11 hours ago, I have a new theory. I'm now wondering if someone has the wrong url for posting their online homework?

Blocking Spammers
I am currently in the process of blocking spam users and deleting these post. Thank you for bringing them to our attention. We will be checking on the spam more often to block these users.
Vicky, Where have you been???
Besides the forum I am also running ThreadsMagazine.com on my own and shooting/producing many of the Threads branded DVDs including "Teach Yourself to Sew, Seasons 1 & 2", the upcoming "Couture Basics" with Claire Shaeffer, and sewing how-to videos with Louise Cutting. It has certainly been a busy year. We are fighting spammers on all fronts unfortunately, and it would be a full time job just to keep them off both of our websites, Facebook, and here on the forum. We are trying to keep up with it now, and also find a better solution to keep them off the website in the first place. I have been checking in on the forum everyday now. Please let me know if there is anything I can do. We are working on getting some technical updates, but unfortunately the forums aren't the highest priority for us.
Happy New Year,
Vicky
