Update on Unique Patterns “bodyskanner”

carolfresia | Posted in Fitting on

In issue No. 103 of Threads, we published a review of the bodyskanner, developed by Unique Patterns in partnership with Virtually Yours Inc. Two of our staff participated in the market trial run in Portland, OR, in June, along with a number of other clients. Unforeseen technical problems arose from this trial, meaning that Unique Patterns was unable to fulfill some of the orders taken in Portland. Aware that their clients were disappointed by this, Unique Patterns has notified us that they have come up with a plan to rectify the situation. Please read the statement below, sent to us by Giles Crouch of Unique Patterns:

Statement from Unique Patterns:

I am posting this statement regarding Unique Patterns bodyskanner pattern delay from the Portland Consumer Market Trial. Faced with serious technical issues from some of the scans, we have decided to take one of the new commercial bodyskanners to Portland in November, where we will re-scan those people with whom we had technical issues and then issue their patterns. Each customer will be contacted personally to schedule their re-scan. We believe in and stand by our products and our members and thankthem for their patience and understanding. New technology brings challenges, but we believe this technology will bring a renewed passion for sewing fashions.

    Hello all--

My first post here. I had to jump in on this discussion of Bodyskanners by Unique Patterns. My experience of the whole deal was disastrous. We were skanned the first week in October. I got my first patterns the 3rd week in December (3 of 9) and they didn't fit. Pants with crotches hanging down nearly to my knees (apparently the computer interpreted my touching thighs as my crotch). No adjustments made for any body irregularities. My left breast is enough larger than the right to cause all my tops to pull to the left, my waistline is 1" higher in back than in front, my right leg is 1" shorter than the left--none of these things were taken into account. The skirt pattern hung too short in the back. The pants, which were supposed to be straight-leg, looked tapered because no one had thought to adjust for my size 18 hips when they decided how wide the pant leg opening should be to LOOK "straight". The tops were all drafted in one piece on the fold--drafted off the small of my two breasts.  (Oh, and by the way, they never notified us how long our delay would be or why, and never apologized. Apparently they were "overwhelmed" by the response. Excuse me, we were at the tail-end of their run, and they scanned us by appointment! You'd think they might have known how many would come!)

I complained. They apologized, asked me to take a bunch of new measurements and redrafted. I complained that I might better have joined their online pattern-making offer and paid $60 less. They ignored my comment. I finally got all my redrafted patterns the last week of February (5 months after the fact). And know what? They still don't fit. I've demanded a refund, and I haven't heard a word from them in 2 weeks. They demanded their money up-front. I laid out over $200, and the place that hosted this had to PAY THEM to come!!! Something on the order of $5000.

In my opinion, this was a rip-off. I'm launching a BBB investigation, for what it's worth. Their being in Canada, it's hard to do anything about them. However, if you have similar experiences, please post them here or email me at [email protected] I intend also to communicate with the gentleman quoted in the first post to this string, to see if I can get any satisfaction. I'm not holding my breath.

    Thanks!
