Valentine’s Day gift ideas?

sewmuchfun | Posted in General Discussion on

I teach people how to sew and several have been asking me for some ideas for making Valentine’s Day gifts. I  can’t think of anything other than a heart pillow. Half of my students are adults. Most of them made fabric bowls during the Christmas season. I’d like to come up with something that isn’t too difficult as many of them are beginners.

What about table mats, table runners, small wall hangings?

You can put a heart motif on almost anything, or use fabric with hearts. For supersimple a heart shaped sachet, more complex a hot pack, the kind filled with rice or other grains that you heat in the microwave. They can be a simple long tube or contoured to fit around the neck. Someone who's gained some control over the machine can satin stitch applique a heart onto any project. Pin cushion, purse, add an embellishment to a commercially made garment.

There is an adorable penny rug in the current issue of Quilts With Style (formerly The Foundation Piecer). You're supposed to use wool, but I'm making it to send to my DD in college, so I just used felt. Anyway, it's a heart-shaped candy box, with little appliqued chocolates and bead ornamentation. Very cute!

How about pillow cases for travel size pillows.  These could be out of Valentine fabric or appliqued.  A lot of people are using these in cars or as they travel.  Gail

Or you could make specialized bath towels if you have an embrodiery machine.  How about things like bath pillows that are covered with terry cloth that can be machine washed, just get a small blow up pillow at a $ store and let  your imagination take over.  I think I would love anything to pamper myself with or that I could use to have some fun.
