Viking vs. Bernina

Sheba | Posted in General Discussion on

I recently purchased a Viking, Iris. I wanted to dive into embroidery I should have researched more but I was eager to start. Don’t get me wrong its a nice machine but limited in the stitches and loop. Then a friend of mine told me about a Bernina Artisa which I feel in love with but its costly. I need advise, should I upgrade my machine to a Designer II by Viking or should purchased a used Artista.  Thanks.

sheba- I would caution you to wait and try your new machine before you are tempted to upgrade.  It is easy to carried away with all the bells and whistles of some machines, but the truth is that machine embroidery takes up much time; shopping for supplies, planning the design, learning to use stabilizers, hooping, choosing thread colors, etc.  You also need to learn what projects interest you, what your willing to spend time embellishing, and what, after all, looks good plain.

I have spent the last year figuring all this out with a small 4x4 field embroidery only machine (Babylock).  When I first purchased the machine, and with all the tempting projects available, I thought I would be an embroidery queen!  But, alas, although the process is enjoyable, I simply can't find the time to really get going.  My sister, at the same time, purchased the Viking Designer II, also with great plans spinning through her head, and all she has managed is to personalize kitchen towels!

I sew with a Bernina 153, which has many decorative stitch options that I also find time consuming to use.  I do love my machines and sew regularly, as I'm sure you will love your Iris.  So, take a very deep breath, try some simple projects and be patient.

Thank you for you input on the sewing machines. When you are shopping at the dealer they make it seem so simple to do the designs. The key is the right thread, fabric, stabalizing, you have to be an artist to come up with such designs. I will stick with my Iris for awhile, and thanks again.
