Hi from downunder

MDAN | Posted in New to Sewing on

Hi all, I am not new to sewing but very average. I bought first machine to mend Kylies as the local sewing shop charged more than the cost of the kylie to repair it.  My wife has passed – so sewing stopped. I am now sewing curtains for my Van renovation for the same cost scenario. I am using a Singer  201K Knee Crank, i so enjoy this that I am looking for other machines. I also fixed up a 99K knee crank for my sisters birthday. I am a 67yr old widower and live in Adelaide South Australia.

Cheers Michael

What on earth is a Kylie?

Hello to you, Michael! It's fun to stay busy with something you enjoy. I sew garments, quilt, and am learning to make shoes. I use older mechanical Berninas and an industrial Juki.

A Kylie is a special type of mattress protector for the elderly. Also down under but in Perth.

Hi from another Aussie! I'm from Budgewoi on the Central Coast of NSW. I'm negotiating all the articles and video's to teach myself to sew clothes for my husband and myself. I am not new to sewing but am also very average and trying to learn more about fitting myself and my husband.
Good on you for pursuing what you love. My husband has sewn himself a pair of pants and enjoyed it. It's wonderful to hear from other men who love to sew!

Hi from Perth in the west. Originally from the Melbourne and used to travel up to Queensland along the coast but admit to never heard of Budgewoi.
Do you have a branch of the Australian Sewing Guild within travelling distance. I joined because I can sew but I wanted to learn more about fitting also and received a lot of help and it is great to meet with other people who share your interests. Men are also welcome. Have a look at the website they also have lessons on line.https://aussew.org.au/ You have to join but it doesn't cost an awful lot and you can at least find out if there is a branch near you. Good Luck from Shirley in the Wild West.

Hi Michael, and all you beloved Aussies! I am in Arizona, USA, but my mother was from Adelaide. I feel a special connection to all of you, almost at a cellular level. I knew what a Kylie was when I was 5 years old!! It is wonderful to see you doing what you enjoy. I am a widower, and when my husband died the sewing stopped for several years. I'm back at it again, making Christening and Baptismal gowns. I haven't turned this into an actual business yet, but I promised my mum before she passed that I would, so I guess that's the next step in the journey! Love to see men who like to sew. As mum would say, good on you.
