Hi ALL,
I’m having the hardest time figuring out how to add volume to the back of this mermaid fit gown I want to wear. Do I add some fabric beneath the fabric? Or gather some fabric and sew it on? I’m just staring at the dress trying to figure out what would be best… I attached some pics to give you ladies an idea of the advice I need.
The first two pics are of the dress I currently have
the following two is the look I am trying to achieve
Thank You!

From the pictures provided, I think what you want is to fill out the back train area of the dress, correct? Best bet here is to sew overlapping gathered layers of tulle to the lining of the dress, under the fabric. It will support the fabric underneath. Think like a pyramid, less gathering over the behind, fuller in the lower layers towards the middle where you want it to puff out more. You will need a little bit towards the sides to keep the skirt flayed out a bit, but not much, and for support. You are creating a crinoline to shape the dress. Tulle, or fine crisp netting is lightweight, easy to sit on and keeps it's shape. Each layer of tulle is usually 2 to 4 layers, and about 12 to 20 inches deep depending on the effect you want. To smooth the silhouette, a single full layer can be gathered over it all. I hope I am clear enough. If you have any more questions, please ask. Cathy
Thank You I will definitely know if I need further assistance. I'm going to try it out this week!
