Waxed Fabric source?

SheKnitsSheSews | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

Hi.  I am looking for some waxed fabric to make a few rain hats.  I bought a waxed hat when in Scotland a few years ago and would like another waterproof hat.  Any suggestions as to where I can purchase fabric?  Thanks for the information!

I don't know where you can buy waxed fabric, but there is a product called Nik-Wax (I've seen it at Joann's) that will waterproof fabric. I believe you wash it into the fabric. I'll search for it online--at the moment this is the only internet connection I can get, and I don't want to lose this message to search for that! Anyway, I have a friend who made a raincoat or two using decorator fabrics with large, fabulous prints that she Nik-waxed. I suspect it's not 100%, rubberized waterproof, but probably would keep the rain out during a dog-walk around the block.

Try http://www.nikwax-usa.com for a description of the available products.

Thanks!  I went to their site and requested a catalogue.

You might try MacPhee Workshop....I know they used to sell a waxed cotton for making Australian drover style coats. And they do mail order all over North America. http://www.macpheeworkshop.com

Thank you for the information.  I'm going to JoAnn's tomorrow and will look for the Nik-wax.  I'll also check out the email links you provided, once my kids are sleeping!

There is also another product that at least at one time that JoAnn's sold by the yard that was a vinyl that came with a backing paper and you removed the paper backing and applied the vinyl to any fabric and used the paper to iron it in place thereby making it waterproof.  Sorry that I cannot remember the name of the product but any of the older or I should say longer employeed counter help at JoAnn's should be able to at least tell you the name of the product.
