What is a resort collection?

georgegabriellecouture | Posted in General Discussion on

I’ve seen these big designers have “resort collection”, what is it? Are these clothes that you wear to go to a resort or what? Does anyone know? Thanks in advance 🙂

I am no expert here but I always thought it meant a collection of summer type clothing that was shown in the winter, theoretically for vacations in warmer climates. We have some real design experts here so I hope one will chime in here. solo

Solosmocker is correct; a resort collection allows shoppers in northern climes find temperature-appropriate clothing for their winter vacations in warmer spots.  It is also a chance for designers to play around with more casual clothing that they can sell at incredibly high prices, figuring that anyone travelling to the tropics for a winter vacation probably can afford and wants to wear haute couture clothing as well.

Those of us who live in tropical or sub-tropical climates wear warm-weather clothing all year long, so we know in an instant that anyone wearing "resort collection" clothing is a tourist!  That said, most resort collections are beautiful, and looking at the gorgeous clothing in magazines or catalogs is a delightful mini-vacation at your coffee break, even if you'll never buy them or vacation in the tropics.

Something else that has happened with resort...it has become a big money maker!  Some designers make more money from their resortwear than they do from their spring and fall collections because there is very little discounting by the department stores because the season is so short and resort customers are dying for something bright and fun for their vacation.  This has happened within the last ten years as more and more of the middle class travel to the warmer climes during the winter.  Just a little extra info:)
