What kind of hem does it have now? I usually put in the same hem that was original. Most bridesmaid's dresses have a narrow hem. The fabric is folded up, stitched on the fold, cut and folded again, stitch on the previous stitching line. I use a narrow hemmer foot that does it all in one step. If the fabric is too thick for the hemmer foot, I serge the raw edge, turn it up and top stitch it. If the gown has a blind hem, I turn up the new hem and hand stitch.

I, too, would use the same technique as the manufacturer used - which was usually a rolled hem. I used a narrow rolled hem foot. I had several in different sizes and would test which was the smallest one I could use. I often found that I had to restitch the bottom of each seam that I would sew across because they would tend to pull apart as I fed them through the rolled hem foot. So I would restitch the bottom of each seam with a very short stitch and then I would cut away excess seam allowance so I was putting less fabric through the rolled hem foot. I can't tell you how many hundreds of times I have done this....
