My wife wants to purchase a serger, but is having some difficulty wading through the marketing hype and salesmanship.
She expects to sew children’s clothes and perhaps some other items (I don’t actually know what specifically other than clothes for our little girl). Please provide any advice so I can help her.
Thanks in advance.

John, Check Threads magazine; they run comparison charts on sewing machines and sergers. Also, there are a couple of inexpensive books on the subject which I highly recommend. The first is 'Owner's Guide to Sewing Machines, Sergers and Knitting Machines', by Gale Grigg Hazen. It is a Chilton book, ISBN #0-8019-7888-2 Also, 'Sewing With Sergers' by Gail Brown and Patti Palmer ISBN #0- 935278-11-7 Chapter one explains what a serger does;how stitches are formed, explains features, mfg. variations,(standard and optional features);this is a must-read before you buy. The rest of the book has great reference and problem-solving tips and tricks. And 'Innovative Serging', by Gail Brown and Tammy Young, ISBN #0-8019-7986-2. Chapter 13 has a machine update guide to serger shopping/key questions and considerations. I've owned my serger for about 13 years, and still refer to these books. Cea
