Woven fabric with a “knit” pattern?

katiesmom | Posted in Fabric and Trim on

I am new to this forum…have read through many times and cannot find the answer to this:  Is it possible to use a woven fabric for a pattern that specifies “knit”?   I am making tops for 7 yr. old daughter…the pattern says knits only, but I was sure I read somewhere (here or somewhere) that you could use a woven fabric if you are really precise with the fit/size.

All help on this is truly appreciated…I have sewn for many years but have never tried this before (I usually follow instructions!).

Many thanks

    dear katiesmom -

sometimes knit garments are drafted with negative ease..so they are smaller than the body they need to fit.. knits can expand to fit...not so easy with a woven.

you may want to compare the size of the pattern to one of your daughter's garments.. and adjust the pattern accordingly...you also may need to add an opening to the neck.. you also may want to lay the pattern pieces out of the bias..that may buy you some stretch as well.

thank you, thank you, thank you...I have decided to make the top with a front opening...back openings are still difficult for her to navigate...I think I can add a bit to the side seams to allow for more ease...

I so very much appreciate your prompt reply...this really helps!

      Thanks again

Check the measurements carefully and don't forgt the ease that is needed for wovens. You make be able to use a pattern that is one or two sizes bigger as a place to start.

thanks so much...I have measured some of my dtr's ready to wear clothing and have found that I will probably need to make the tops two sizes larger (side seams and sleeve width) as the rest of the pattern (neckline, shoulders, etc.) seems to be a good fit...

I really appreciate all of the wonderful advice...this has helped greatly!

      Thanks again...
