Lenora, there are lots of patterns of this type in the formal wear section of the Butterick catalogue.
*Vogue has a really cute chiffon wrap pattern
*Last fall I made a fabulous silk chiffon wrap to wear with an evening dress. And it was easy! It's called a cocoon wrap, and the instructions for it are on pp. 120-121 of Claire Shaeffer's High-Fashion Sewing Secrets. It's basically a big square with openings for your arms. It's shown in wool, but it was very, very nice in silk chiffon.
*I attended a workshop a few mo ago on Creativity. The presenter was Linda MacPhee. She showed that cocoon wrap and it was remarkably attractive for something so simple to make. You don't even cut into the fabric. She talked about it being a way to use a length of fabric until you decided what you wanted to make from it. :-)It takes a 3 1/2 to 4 yd length of fabric. fold the two ends to meet in the middle and stitch those 2 ends together from the top edge down for about 12" or so. Then stitch the top edge shut, leaving enough unstitched at both ends by the folds so you can put you arms through those. then just put it on like a coat. The 12" seam is your center back seam alnd the other seam is like a yoke seam across your back. In the right fabric it drapes quite nicely and looks elegant.Lala
