Zipper Halves/ Fabric Gift Box
I finished my first gift box and now have half a zipper. But Threads seems to have come to the rescue again! From the main page is a link to an excerpt from Embellish Chic on using hardware as embellishment and, lo and behold! some ideas for using zipper halves as a decorative edging! You guys have done it again with your great ideas!
And to add a silly/creative flair to the gift boxes I am making, I have canibalized several zippers. When I put my boxes together, I make sure the pull is a different color than the zipper. I think it adds a nice little touch of color to such a neat idea. I haven’t tried crazy quilting a box yet, but you know that project will not be far off!

Way cool.
I just bought some heavy interfacing to help build those boxes... as I start thinking about holiday sewing (yeah, I know its late, but soccer season just ended). I asked the clerk at the fabric store about zippers... and she told me that the "zipper by the foot" would work, and I noticed they do sell extra pulls.
BUT... I have some old zippers from cannibalized blue jeans that I might try using. Basically making up the tetrahedron gift boxes by recyclining jeans... including the zipper. It won't be laid flat, I'll have to finagle it to work with a short zipper.
Don't you wish they made gold, silver, bronze and clear zippers? Or clear with glitter? Some are molded materials and that would be possible I think. You are right. Zippers need jazzing up!
Well, your basic metal zipper is kinda bronzy looking! But they would not work for the fabric gift box.
Here is one idea I got from the owner of Seattle Fabrics (a long time ago when it was a smaller store with a resident dog named Marley):
Take two seperating zippers of different colors... seperate them and use one color on one side and the other color on the other side. This is fun since those zippers come in a variety of colors, including the teeth.
Oh that would be cute for my girls fleece jackets:)
