Halloween Costume Contest 2013

Prince Costume

This is a little prince Halloween costume, which is a child’s size 3-4, that I made for my 3-year old grandson.  I used McCall’s pattern #M5214.  I used red costume satin for the jacket, belt and cape and gold costume satin for the lining.  The shoulder caplets were trimmed with Simplicity gold ½” metallic cord.  The sleeve cuffs were trimmed with Wrights gold ¼” metallic baby rick rack.  The cape was trimmed around all edges with Simplicity ¾” gold trim (60% metallic, 35% cotton, 5% nylon).  The belt ends were detailed with Wrights 1″ fringe (67% polyester, 33% metallic).  The 16 gold buttons were self-covered using 7/8″ cover buttons and gold costume satin.   Interfacing was used for the collar, cuffs and button/button-hole areas.  To complete the costume, I bought black pleated slacks, size 4T, and hand stitched a strip of red costume satin down the outside of each leg to complement the outfit.  To finalize, I bought black SA LIL Austin dress shoes, a gold crown (with jeweled effect) and scepter.

I would love to win a sewing contest because I have loved sewing since high school when my mother gave me a sewing machine.  I sewed for my children until brand-name clothing created competition for home-made garments.  After making my daughter’s communion dress, based on Cinderella’s dress to the ball, I dreamt of opening my own bridal dress shop but was never able to do that.  I guess my grandson’s prince costume idea came from the story of Cinderella, too, while I watched his DVD with him one day.  I am glad I made this costume, and I love it.  I have not seen any like it for little boys, and I believe it is a costume that enhances a boy’s positive image, encourages gentility and, hopefully, makes a statement on boys’ fashion.
