SewStylish Spring Fashion Challenge 2014

Not a Real Green Dress

I met Jenny when she was first teased and tested in the fall. So cute. Just a perfect day dress, girly but not too revealing. And I know it will look just how I want, because it’s Scientific Seamstress. I planned this dress in November, I bought the fabric in December. It’s Sis Boom Anastasia in Grass, from the Girl’s World Vibe collection. I liked that it had an almost polka dot feel to the flower toss, in a sort of retro/modern way that is pretty much who I am. So I joined a Ready To Wear Fast in late December, vowing to not buy ANY clothes for myself, and I was totally going to make this first thing in the new year, then it was going to be for Pattern Revolution’s #selfcaresewing month in February. Then it was February 28th and I hadn’t made it yet to enter! So March 1st, I got to stitching. March is longer than February, so I hereby declare it Me Made March. Yep, that’s it.

For this dress, I made a quick muslin to check the fit with the fabric I planned on for my lining. It felt pretty much perfect, except for some gapping at the middle back. I resolved to taper the sides of the back band piece down to a smaller width at the bottom, to account for where the piece hits my waist. This worked really well. The gathers at the back are soooo pretty.

Other than the band trimming, I made only a couple other changes. I picked the cap sleeve, and chose to turn a narrow tiny hem rather than line it. Just personal preference, I wanted something less heavy but still a little shoulder coverage. I also understitched the lining to the seam allowance at the neckline to prevent it rolling to the outside. This is mostly because I don’t iron my day to day clothes. Just not gonna happen. Lastly, I used an invisible zipper. I love the zipper instructions in Carla’s patterns, but I wanted to elevate my look a little bit more and have my dress be just slightly more professional.

I would definitely make this dress again or recommend it to others. I think it would be great in a dressier fabric for all those cocktail parties I don’t attend, or more casual as a day to day around the town dress, because I think unfrumpification is an important trend. A sleeveless solid would be great. Well, at least I finally have my green dress.

And, about Me Made March? Well, let’s just say it deserves to happen. And mostly because March is longer than February. Who’s with me? #memademarch
