How to Hand-Hemstitch

Threads #178, April/May 2015

Learn the ins and outs of hemstitching in this article by Kenneth D. King from Threads #178 (April/May 2015).

Hemstitching creates a line of openwork within a fabric’s weave that can be manipulated into distinct patterns. In this drawn threadwork technique, threads are pulled from the fabric’s weave, and the remaining cross threads are stitched together in different ways to form a variety of patterns. I’ll show you how to create four hemstitching variations: the single hemstitch, the double hemstitch, the diagonal hemstitch, and fringe. You can use these heirloom techniques to create pattern and detail within a garment’s body, or to beautify the area above a hem.
