Pattern Review: Simplicity Threads 1103 Dresses

Sewing Tip: Create evenly spaced running stitches in a tightly woven fabric by setting the machine to a basting stitch and sewing a line of needle holes, without thread, to use as a guide.

Simplicity Threads 1103 (Out of print)

This dress comes in four variations. All views feature a dropped waistline and an above-the-knee hem. One version has short sleeves, a V-neckline, and running stitches to embellish the sleeve and neckline edges. Another view is sleeveless, includes a V-neckline, and has a lace overlay. These first two options have a back yoke with a triangular opening and a partial circle skirt. Another version is sleeveless and has a yoke with a peephole above the bust, which is accented with running stitches. Running stitches also are used to accentuate the front princess seams. The final view includes piping along the wide strap edges and the front and back princess seams. These last two views are pleated at the front waistline and gathered at the back waistline. All seam lengths match, and our tester said the sewing was moderately difficult. Suggested fiber types include rayon, cotton, or linen. Learn expert ways to sew piping in seams in “Essential Techniques: Perfect piping,” page 74.

(Sized 4-20 for busts 29.5-42 in. and hips 31.5-44 in.)

Sewing Tip: Create evenly spaced running stitches in a tightly woven fabric by setting the machine to a basting stitch and sewing a line of needle holes, without thread, to use as a guide.
