Halloween Costume Contest 2015

Money Bag

I was asked by my best friend to create a ‘money bag’ costume for her 3 month old daughter.  Her idea was that they would be the burglers and she would be the bag of loot.  She turned out to be the cutest bag of loot I have ever seen 🙂

The top, made out of the money fabric, was made by using a romper pattern from nap-timecreations (available free online) and I created the bottom.  I cut two rectangles (double the width of the bottom of the finished top) then finished (similar to a hem) and gathered the top to give it a cinched bag affect.  Next, I top stitched the top to the bottom.  I cut some of the “dollars” out of the fabric, used heat and bond to fuse two together and sewed them between the bag and the top to give the appearance of money hanging out.  I created the dollar symbol using a fusible applique and zig-zag stitched around the edges.  I tried to make it look more like a bag by tucking in the corners of the bottom and sewing a diagonal line.  All seams are seam finished with a serger. The back is closed with sewn in snaps and two bottons on top.

The fabric: both top and bottom were purchased at JoAnn Fabrics
