My inspiration came from a Kate Spade print ad showcasing big, bold, red and black plaid clothes and accessories for Fall ’15. My sister, Heidi, saw the fabric and loved it! I showed her the advertisement. The rest is history. I began draping the skirt on her as we stood in my dining room. The two pleats either side of center front are pleated at different pleat depths in order to create strong, identical, black vertical lines. I intentionally placed the dominant color bar at the bottom of the skirt and painstakingly matched seams. I guided her in selecting a “Taylor Swift-style” cropped top (so the pleats would show) and plain, low-cut pumps to elongate her legs. Heidi’s outfit received rave reviews at her nephews’ high school’s fashion show (It didn’t dawn on me the school colors are black and red!) and the Arizona Make It With Wool Dessert Gala and Style Show.
