More Fabulous Art-Wear by Cassie Stephens

Threads #184, April/May 2016

The pop art pieces of Andy Warhol were Cassie's inspiration for her Pop Art dress and jean-jacket ensemble.

In Threads #184 (April/May 2016), we profiled elementary school art teacher Cassie Stephens, who creates fabulous outfits to inspire and engage her students. We promised you more of Cassie’s unique art-wear, so here for your viewing pleasure are a few additional outfits and some close-ups of their surfaces so you can see how their embellishment was done.

donut fascinator

Inspired by the painting Three Donuts (1994) by Wayne Thiebaud, Cassie created this stuffed and felted-fiber fascinator of a piled-high plate of donuts.

pop art dress jean jacket

The pop art pieces of Andy Warhol were Cassie’s inspiration for her Pop Art dress and jean-jacket ensemble.

Cassie appliquéd pop art motifs in coordinating fabrics onto a purchased dress and jacket.

paint splatter dress

Cassie found paint-splatter effect fabric that was perfect for her Brushstroke dress design–and for hiding real paint marks during splatter-painting day in art class.

crayola sweater

Cassie loves needle felting and has used it on several RTW garments to give them her unique brand of art-teacher chic, including this sweater on which she needle-felted a giant box of Crayola crayons.

water lilies skirt

For a skirt embellishment inspired by Claude Monet’s Water Lilies, Cassie needle-felted wool roving in the shape of water lilies and lily pads onto variegated-blue fabric.

felted fox cardigan

Cassie gave this adorable purchased cardigan the needle-felting treatment: a sly fox drapes around its shoulders oh-so-casually.

It’s no wonder needle-felting is Cassie’s favorite technique.

palette purse

Cassie made this palette purse from two woven straw placemats, bias tape, and clever fabric appliqué. It’s the perfect accompaniment to her paint-palette printed dress.

I love this comic-like style. I recently purchased similar curtains for my rented flat. If you're on a hunt for ideas on how to spruce up your home without the landlord freaking out, getting new curtains is a good start.

Pop Art reminds me of when I was a kid. I have an apron similar to the first design. Well have to make some pillow cases and stuff like that. Awesome looking!

The "Pow" and "Pop" dress looks more Roy Lichtenstein than Warhol. I love all these brilliant works! I feel quite inspired.
