I was asked to make a Cinderella costume for a local charity theatre group (that my daughter attends). At the time there wasn’t a commercial pattern available so I played with draping and constructed my own – the lose base was a 17th century court dress with heavily gathered bell / a line shaped skirt on a tight v shaped bodice. The gown had to fit from a size 8 to a size 14 so was laced at the back plus there were extension seams under the arms so that it could accommodate wider torsos and still look fitted at the front. The dress also had to fit a variety of heights – this was achieved by having a crinoline underneath that was adjustable – wider to shorten the dress and narrower to accommodate taller girls.
I couldn’t get the correct organza with crystals already glued on so I glued 5000 Swarovski crystals by hand using clear glue and a printed diamond shape grid (printed onto Perspex) to get the crystals in a uniform diamond spacings
The dress was made for a youth theatre charity and had to accommodate size 8 - size 14 And be able to size up and down for height. Typically my beautiful Cinderella lost weight over the construction process. There were 8 layers of skirt and the top 4 were hemmed with curled fishing wire
the shawl was created by draping a single 1.5 metre wide X 1m long piece of organza. I draped it onto the models shoulders and then used gathering stitches to get the swags in the correct place. In the front centre there is a sewn on Swarovski crystal butterfly. The other butterflies are a mixture of guipure lace and wired organza
