My daughter, 13 years old at the time, wanted to be the Queen of Hearts after seeing Tim Burton’s movie Alice in Wonderland. After studying photos of Helena Bonham Carter’s costume, designed by Colleen Atwood, I chose Butterick’s Making History pattern 5440. I modified the bodice, elongating the front point and removing the tabs at the hem. I used a gold satin for the skirt and a red cotton hearts print for the inset. The bodice body was sewn of a think cotton blend knit which made fitting easier. The gold satin center front was heavily embellished with braided cord, rickrack, prebeaded ribbon, heart-patterned ribbon, heart shaped buttons and diamond shaped “jewels”. The sleeves were also modified, with narrow strips of the red heart print used for the arm bands and upper sleeve trim. The gold sleeve body was overlaid with black netting, and the sleeves trimed with lace trim remnants. Most of the fabric was found in my stash, but the gold was purchased for this project. The underblouse was my own design, modifying a collar pattern from a blouse. A short white upper bodice was overlaid with a sheer black polyester chiffon, with tucks added. This was sewn to a black knit lower bodice, worn under the embelished top. A vintage family heirloom petticoat received a new coat of spray starch and was worn under the skirt.
