This family theme originated from our child’s love of monkeys. After the monkey costume was done, we joked about having a “pet monkey” and then I began to develop the idea of two prehistoric people with a pet monkey.
For the monkey I started with Simplicity 1767 and modified the placement of the ears, appliqued a round belly traced from a bowl, lengthened the legs to allow for more movement (wiggly toddler!) and designed the curly tail myself. I used a minky-type fabric, and french seams where possible.
For the cave man and woman I couldn’t find a pattern I liked, so I designed and drafted my own patterns for everything you see on us. I used faux furs, minky, and fleece. The boot covers have elastic hand-sewn into the tops and across the bottoms of the shoes to keep them secure.
The banana bag is also my own design. It is made of broadcloth, fleece, and bias tape for the carrying handles. I handstitched the stem and end on, and machine stitched the rest. It has no closure for the opening because that would have been difficult for my child to deal with while trick-or-treating.
