Marfy 9071 Pants with Zipper Details | 360-Degree View

Threads #218, Summer 2022

Marfy 9071 includes two garments: a top and pants. We are only showing the pants, which feature unusual zipper details. The slim-fitting, ankle-length pants have a narrow waistband, fly front, curved back yoke with zip pockets, and 4-inch hemline vents. The front features five diagonal seams embellished with zippers, one of which includes a functional pocket. The top edge of the pants waistband sit at the natural waist.
The back yoke side seam does not line up with the diagonal front side seam. It is meant to be longer (3/16-inch), so it can be eased to the front. Other than this, all seams and match points line up well. We found the left leg’s lowest zipper placement line marked on the pattern is in the opposite direction from the illustration on Marfy’s website. Based on 60-inch-wide fabric and a pattern size 42, the pants require about 1-1/3 yards.

Successful sewing—without instructions

As always, the patterns from this company come without instructions and have no seam or hem allowances, though grainlines and all essential match points are clearly marked with lines, letters, and plenty of notches. This design is relatively straightforward in construction. For guidance on all aspects of making pants, take a look at our Fit and Sew Pants Project Guide. Techniques you’ll need to know for this Marfy pattern include a fly-front zipper, invisible zipper installation, or an exposed zipper application if you choose to highlight the zipper openings.

Helpful remarks

Our seamstress notes:
• The front leg pieces are sent in one piece. Extend the grainlines before cutting the front pieces apart where the zippers are inserted. Label the pieces from top down L1, L2, etc.
• The direction in which the zippers should open is not marked on the pattern. On our pants, we made the zippers on the front zip towards the side seams, except the long one on the right leg, which zips up.

Fabric recommendations

For the pants, use a stretch woven fabric, a stable ponte knit, or other bottom-weight textile. We used 100 percent linen for our sample pants. We also opted for invisible zippers, but you could pick a fancier closure and an exposed zipper application to call attention to this unique detail.
(Sized European 42–46 for busts 34 5/8–37 3/4 inches and hips 36 1/4–39 3/8 inches) Each pattern is hand-cut in one size.
