Two-Way Sequined Dress | 360-Degree View

Threads #203, June/July 2019

Adapted and sewn by author Patricia Robison from Vogue 8904, this dress features a simple silhouette with big impact. The dress is sewn in a two-way sequined fabric. On one side, the sequins are metallic gold and on the other, a shimmering cream color. Two-way sequined fabrics are also known as reversible or mermaid sequined fabrics. They can be found in home décor and party garments. The sequins have different colors on each side and each is sewn onto the fabric base through a hole near its edge. Mermaid sequins overlap like fish scales and can be flipped to the reverse side by moving your hand across them.

Working with this fabric requires some effort, as sequins must be removed from the seam allowances before sewing. Patricia explains her process and gives tips for success in her article “Sew with Sequined Fabrics,” in Threads #203, June/July 2019.

For additional information, take a look at “How to Sew Sequined Fabric,” and read a helpful tip for handling sequins along seamlines.
