Marilyn
I used some white poly satin in my “stash” to make the Marilyn Monroe costume. I based it on Butterick Retro B5209, but decided to put a pleated 3 width skirt on it, as well as raise the backline and slope of the bodice. But it was a good base to start with when I was on a real time crunch to get it finished.I found that the look of the pleats did not rely on exact measurements. I hemmed the 3 widths of fabric first, and finger measured the pleats in pressing them well with steam. Then I basted the tops of the pleats in place and ran a double gathering stitch to take them up to the final width I needed at the waistline.
Why should it win? Well being a 4-H leader I always try to dress up for our groups halloween event for the town’s children. Last year I tried going as Lizzie Borden, in one of my Historical 1890’s designs I had made. NONE of the kids recognized me and I was totally bummed out! This year I had the pleasure of seeing several of the adults have to do a double take to recognize me (I have long dark hair) and then a few of the kids even knew who I was supposed to be (kind of- HEY you are that lady that stands over the vent and her skirt blows up!)
