American Girl Spanish Colonial Dress, my original design & pattern. Inspired by the colonial period in New Mexico, particularly Santa Fe in the early 19th century.
This is my “Spanish Beauty” outfit for Josefina Montoya, the American Girl doll of colonial New Mexico.
The body is constructed from jewel-red faux silk fabric. It has a slight grab and nubby texture, but is lightweight. I added a narrow black pom pom trim around the bodice & sleeve puffs for interest. The bodice has a delicate lace panel and darts. The sleeve caps were machine embroidered w/ diagonal vines before piecing. Bodice is self-lined.
Skirt is narrow and keeping w/ the Spanish colonial style of the time. It has a gathered, almost bustle-like back, and dips in length to give a slight train. The outfit is complemented by a Spanish style black hat constructed of corduroy with black dangling pom poms, that offer a fun movement. Red velvet hat band & looped Chin Strap add interest. The alternate head wear is a shaped Mantilla of black lace.
Of course, the black velvet ribbon choker with red satin Rose completes her look and adds no small amount of drama to the outfit. The Rose is intentionally placed at an angle, but the choker can of course be rotated to center. Hand-sewn snap closure.
Button closures up back bodice. This was a lot of fun to design and construct. It’s my teen daughter’s favorite outfit of my AG Doll series.
